Team Africa Climbers Reaching Out to Help Children

Two dozen or so adventurists are making final preparations for the experience of a lifetime. Collectively Team Africa 2010-11, led by Werner Berger, is counting the days until it embarks on a trek to the Serengeti and to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. It’s sure to be a memorable trip (just ask the Mt. Everest team).

Werner himself will be providing additional notes about the trip on What’s Up, USANA? next week, and of course we’ll share stories once the climbers return in early January.

An Important Mission
But today I wanted to share details about a phenomenal project orchestrated by Heshie Segal, a member of Team Africa and a USANA Ruby Director.

She is working to provide orphaned children in Africa with clothing, school supplies, and other basic necessities. Already she’s purchased more than 600 outfits and countless school supplies to deliver to the children of Tanzania. Shipping costs, however, are prohibitive and she is requesting the help of the USANA family to ensure that the donations are delivered. Also, donations of duffel-type luggage that could hold 50 pounds would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Heshie to make arrangements.

“Since the 1990s, I have been dreaming about a trip to Africa and what I could personally do to help the children … supply clothing, food, build a school, put in water systems, bring peace and more,” Heshie wrote in an e-mail. “Many of our USANA friends have suggested we reach out to the entire USANA family to support the orphans by asking for contributions to help in making the USANA name familiar in the Tanzania region.”

Through this initial project, Heshie is striving to bring relief to the children of Tanzania. This time she is partnering with Hope Through Opportunity, a non-profit that currently works with orphans in the Kilimanjaro region, but envisions future distributions via the Children’s Hunger Fund.

“I am so proud to say I am a USANA Associate and because of my being an independent distributor, I am able to earmark money for this special project, which I believe to be in total alignment with Dr. Wentz’s vision,” Heshie wrote. “Thank you in advance for who you are and for your caring!”

      "Shipping costs, however, are prohibitive…"

Seemingly special arrangements could be made with shippers to get the donations delivered and write those costs off as their own contribution to the children ?

That's a great idea, Tom. Definitely something to look into.

      Thanks,
      Tim
