USANA Athletes: NFL Playoffs, Boxing, Triathlon, & More

Welcome to 2011 … USANA Athletes style.

It seemed every time I opened my e-mail or scanned Facebook in the month of December and the first week of January I received a new note or saw an update trumpeting another athletic achievement. It’s exciting! I wanted to share the news with each of you today and encourage you to pass it along.

In fact, just as I was wrapping up this post I received a note from Andrea Chen, our outstanding athletes coordinator, letting me know that George Bovell, an Olympic swimmer, finished 2010 ranked No. 4 in the world in the 100-meter IM and No. 9 in the 50 freestyle. Congrats.

And here’s another one… Did you read this excellent article featuring Derek Parra? How awesome would it be to learn a sport from someone who won a gold medal in that sport? Wow. Derek’s always giving back to his community.

Here’s to another successful year for these athletes and others who trust their health to USANA.

NE3 Cheers for USF (and Jennifer Azzi)
Speaking of Olympic gold medalists…
Several members of NE3, a USANA team based in the California Bay Area, showed support for Jennifer Azzi and the University of San Francisco women’s basketball team late last month. Be sure to read Jennifer’s blog for more information about this event (that resulted in a USF ‘W’)!

Chiefs in the Playoffs
Any NFL fans out there? We’d like to offer up a big congratulations to Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Andy Studebaker, whose team will be hosting the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday in the wild card round of the playoffs. Andy played in all 16 regular season games for the AFC West-champion Chiefs (10-6) this year and finished with 28 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

That’s Fighting News!

George Hillyard

We have a lot of news involving boxing/other fighting sports this month for some reason, which is fantastic! Here’s a quick rundown:

  • Brian Knapp, a good friend of social media in the United Kingdom, passed along two notes about a couple of fighters he’s been in touch with. George “Hit Hard” Hillyard, 25, spoke at the UK Breaking Through event last October about what fuels his passion for the sport of boxing.

“I am in training for my busy fight schedule for 2011,” George says. “We’re looking at up to 9 potential bouts. I now need my training to be spot on. I need to ensure that my body is fuelled perfectly with the best available nutrition on the market. I cannot put a value on what these products have done for me.”

Check out George on Facebook and Twitter.

  • Chris Knowles

Also, here’s bit of news Brian sent to us via Julian Knowles about Chris Knowles, a top-ranked UKMF Super Heavyweight fighter. He holds many titles at English, British, European and World level. He is currently a professional Muay Thai fighter contracted as a part of the MSA Premier League and also competes internationally in K1 tournaments, having fought in Holland, France, Hungary and Thailand.

Chris started using USANA products early in his career, Julian writes. Two of Chris’ favorite products are Proflavanol 90, which is now Proflavanol® C100, and CoQuinone™ 30.

  • One of USANA’s newest sponsored athletes is boxer Sijuola Shabazz, above. Welcome to the team, Sijuola. We’ll be keeping an eye out!

“I am very grateful that God created such a great person as Dr. Wentz,” Sijuola says. “Since I have been taking the USANA® Essentials and a few of the other nutritionals, I feel healthier and I feel much more energetic in my workouts. An hour before I get in the ring I have a Rev3 Energy® drink and I can feel the extra energy hours past the final bell. After taking Procosa® II for just a week, I could feel a real difference in my joints, especially my elbows and shoulders. Thanks to USANA, my health feels like 110 percent!”

  • Here’s an interesting article about champion professional boxer and USANA Associate Jose Antonio Rivera. It sounds like he’s thinking about getting back in the ring! We wish him the best!
  • Finally, Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley, the undefeated (26-0) WBO Junior Welterweight World Champion will get in the ring against Devon Alexander on January 29. The bout is scheduled to be broadcast on HBO at 10 p.m. EST. Best of luck to Desert Storm!

Top Honor for Top Triathlete
You might have seen the following on the USANA Athletes Facebook page (thanks to Liza Pascal and Penny Kirk for the tip). Ani De Leon, 35, a USANA fan in the Philippines, recently won the Ironman 70.3 Race Series in Kenting, Taiwan (check out her blog). Amazing accomplishment!

Here’s an excerpt from Elizabeth Lolarga’s article she wrote for Yahoo! Southeast Asia:

“When competing, she feels tremendous happiness. It is her chance to experience nature closely. She explained: ‘I get to know different places really well. There is nothing like swimming, biking, and running from point to point which forces you to commune with all the elements.’ ”

Major Leaguer Makes News
D.J. Carrasco, a Major League Baseball pitcher and USANA-sponsored athlete, signed a $2.5 million, two-year contract with the New York Mets. He went a combined 3-2 with a 3.68 earned run average in 63 games last season for Pittsburgh and Arizona. He has improved his ERA for five consecutive seasons.

Darren Niedermeyer

Great News from a World-Class Pole Vaulter
We received the following note from Darren Niedermeyer, a USANA-sponsored pole vaulter:

“This past year I earned a spot as alternate for the USA Track and Field Team for Indoor World Championships and I couldn’t have done it without USANA! This year USANA helped me set a personal best pole vault of 18’9″ and am extremely motivated to make the USA Team for World Championship this coming year! Recently, I had the pleasure of attending a Health and Freedom in Schaumburg, IL, and had a few Associates pick my brain about my experience with the products. I believe all of us benefited from the experience.”

And Finally…
December proved to be a big month for USA Luge and US Speedskating, two USANA-sponsored teams, right in the Home Office’s backyard. USA Luge hosted a World Cup event at the Olympic Park in Park City, Utah (check out the video on the Corporate Blog), while the Olympic Oval played host to the US Short Track Championships. Then, later in the month, the US Speedskating Long Track National Championship came to Kearns, Utah.

Stay updated on these teams’ accomplishments by visiting the USA Luge website or liking US Speedskating on Facebook (and following on Twitter).
