Over the New Year’s weekend, due to a combination of poor data service and needing to decompress, I went A.W.O.L. from social media. That’s right: from Wednesday through Sunday I did not log in to Facebook or check a blog. I did post a couple of things on Twitter, but was not on there enough to keep up with anything going on.

What I learned was that I can live without being completely connected, and got me thinking about why I use social media.

As Tim pointed out in Social Media Tip #22, it is always good to review your social media presence, and make adjustments and refinements. This is a great tip, and something I try to do regularly. I also go through my friend lists/follower lists to make sure I am connecting with people I want to connect with, and that are adding value to my social media experience. Have you updated your contact lists lately? It could help you focus, and possibly discover people to contact that have been off your radar. Mine your database before you start looking elsewhere.

Navigating Social Media News
As you know, the social media landscape is constantly changing. I know that sometimes I feel that I have finally have learned what I need to know about a topic or platform, then it changes. If you want to keep up on the latest news and ideas, I would recommend you check www.mashable.com and www.socialmediaexaminer.com regularly. For direct sales specific tips, the go-to site is www.jenfongspeaks.com.
