Exceptional tennis, anyone?
Whether you’re a diehard fan or simply a casual observer, the final weekend at the US Open proved to be a magical one for the sport and for three USANA Brand Ambassadors.
Samantha Stosur, the world’s No. 7-ranked player, beat Serena Williams 6-2, 6-3 on Sunday to capture her first Grand Slam title. She became the first Australian woman to win a Grand Slam title since Evonne Goolagong won Wimbledon in 1980. She also joins Margaret Court as the only Australian women to win the US Open.
“It’s a dream and a goal I’ve had for so long,” Sam said in a telephone interview from Tampa, Florida. “That’s why you play all those tournaments and train hard on and off the court — for that exact moment.”
A whirlwind media tour, hundreds of congratulatory messages, and a permanent smile have been Sam’s world over the last few days.
“I’m so happy for Sam,” said Liezel Huber, a fellow USANA Brand Ambassador who won a title of her own on Sunday. “She’s a player who has risen to the top. She’s a healthy, vibrant player and personality. I think she’s a great role model.”
Earlier in the day, Liezel and partner Lisa Raymond played an epic final match to claim the 2011 US Open women’s doubles title. The duo dropped the first set to Vania King and Yaroslava Shvedova before rallying to win 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(3). It marked the fifth Grand Slam title for Liezel and 46th doubles title overall.
“I want to give a big shout out to the USANA Family! I feel like a champ this morning. Winning the US Open women’s doubles with Lisa Raymond and regaining the #1 ranking! What a moment for me and I wanted to share it with you…my USANA Family!!! I am fit, strong and healthy. I love my Booster C600! Love to all of you. Liezel”
Only one of six players in WTA history to hold the doubles No. 1 ranking for more than 100 weeks, Liezel will increase her total number of weeks at the top to at least 148, through the week of September 12. Only Martina Navratilova (237) and Cara Black (163) have held the doubles No. 1 ranking for more weeks than Liezel, according to a WTA news release.
Liezel called us shortly after landing in Houston, where she will spend a week at home before competing at WTA events in Asia.
“I’m so happy for USANA,” Liezel said. “It definitely shows we are peak products — USANA and Sam and myself. I’m delighted for all of us.”
Sam is scheduled to make several media appearances on Tuesday, September 13. Tune in! All times EST. (UPDATE: These might have aired today. I’ll post the links where available).

Melanie Oudin got the weekend started on a winning note for the USANA Brand Ambassadors. She and partner Jack Sock won the US Open mixed doubles title, marking the first Grand Slam victory each for these up-and-coming players.
“Seeing all the names on the trophy — Mary Carillo, Martina Navratilova, John McEnroe … — and knowing my name will be on there forever, that’s pretty cool,” Melanie said in an interview with What’s Up, USANA? just before she was scheduled to talk with ESPN. “I can say I won my first Grand Slam as a teenager.”
The excitement exuded from the 19-year-old’s voice as she talked about the experience, which included daily snacks of USANA’s Chocolate Fusion Nutrition Bars. And since she has difficulty swallowing pills, she’s sure to take her chewable Usanimals.
Congratulations to Sam, Liezel, and Melanie. We are proud to have you as USANA Brand Ambassadors! Go Team USANA!
