Ask USANA’s CEO: 7 Words that Describe You
Have you ever had a question that you’ve wanted to ask the CEO of USANA? Well, now is your chance! I’ll be answering your questions once a month right here on What’s Up, USANA? Ask your question in the comment section, and your question might just get answered next month!
Question: What are seven words that describe you?
Answer: That is a tough question, but thank you for limiting me to seven words to make things a little easier. I’m a big fan of the book Now, Discover Your Strengths, so I’m going to take some from there and then give you some of my weaknesses, too, which will give a well-rounded description of me.
Responsible — I feel personally responsible for everything I take ownership in or commit to. As a CEO, I am almost obsessed with doing things right and seeing things through. I am dedicated to USANA, and more importantly, I am dedicated to the success of our Associates who are out there representing USANA every day. I will do whatever it takes to help our Associates use USANA to become successful and meet their own personal goals, whatever they may be. Hence our tagline: Your Health. Your Life. Your Way.™
Competitive — To reach the top and stay there, you have to be constantly raising the bar. This means constant improvement and doing everything you can to keep moving toward that ultimate objective. Learn from your successes as well as your failures, and never be satisfied.
Analytical — I strive to remain objective to truly understand what is best for the company and our Associates. You have to be aware of everything going on and not let your emotions or ego hide tough realities. As Jack Welch writes, “Candor is critical for business success.” You have to face your weaknesses in order to get better. You can’t ignore them or sweep them under the rug. This keeps our company successful — we face the tough realities and deal with them.
Stubborn — The nice way to say it would be perseverance. There are ups and downs in every business. You have to be able to persevere to reach your ultimate goal. It’s easy to give up when times are tough; it takes stubborn resolve to keep moving ahead until you find success.
Impatient — I want to do everything, see everything, experience everything. I get frustrated when an opportunity to try something new slips by me. Those who know me know I love to experience life to its fullest and feel the rush of adrenaline. Now, with a beautiful wife and two children at home, I’m learning to prioritize what’s most important. I let some of those crazy opportunities pass me by, and I’m learning patience from my toddler teachers.
Introverted — This may seem crazy, but it’s true. This is the area I’ve had to work on the most to be successful. In a people business, you can’t hide in the corners and be a wallflower like I used to be at high school dances. I have learned to overcome my shyness or surround myself with connectors who help start the conversation. Once a relationship is started, I’m comfortable maintaining it.
Visionary — I don’t think you can be a CEO without being a visionary. It’s not enough to see where your company is today. You have to look ahead to the future, have a plan, and see what goals you need to meet to make that plan happen. You have to see what others can’t.
These are just a few of the words that I think describe me. As the CEO of your own USANA business, I hope these words inspire you to look at your own qualities and decide what attributes you embody that will allow you to be successful within USANA.
