You may remember our recent Scientifically Speaking post about the air quality in Salt Lake City during the winter. Let’s just say, it’s not pretty.
As I’m writing this, we’re smack dab in the middle of one of the terrible inversions that traps all the pollutants in the air, forming a hazy cloud of greyness that envelops the whole valley. It’s just gross!
Pollution can cause stress on your body — namely oxidative stress that, if it continues, can affect your health, including your respiratory and cardiovascular system. I can tell you, after a few days of this stuff, you can feel the effects of the pollutants — tightness in your lungs, headaches, a twinge in your throat.
While we can’t escape the pollution, we can try to protect ourselves from its effects.

HealthPak for a Boost in Antioxidant Defense
In addition to the Essentials, the HealthPak contains a powerful AO Booster that’s packed with resveratrol, grape seed extract, and — the nutrient I’d like to focus on today — alpha-lipoic acid.
Alpha-lipoic acid (LA) does a lot for your body. One of its more notable activities is that it helps recycle the body’s antioxidants, like coenzyme Q10. It’s sort of like bringing in reinforcements, resupplying those antioxidants so they can keep neutralizing excessive reactive oxygen species (otherwise known as free radicals), which are what can cause oxidative stress. Protection from that oxidative stress is important for maintaining the integrity and function of your cells, and even your DNA, to help you stay healthy. *
In particular, LA helps restore natural glutathione levels in the body. Glutathione is a well-known cell protector, and keeping levels high is especially important when we’re surrounded by pollution, because our stores are used up as it works to defend against the oxidative damage caused by it.*
LA and glutathione also support the body’s natural detoxification processes, so it can help your body naturally rid itself of any toxins that may have entered as a result of exposure to pollution.
Although it’s found in spinach, tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, and other plant and animal sources, it’s very difficult to get enough LA for real benefits from diet alone, because dietary intakes have shown almost no effect on concentrations in the blood. So supplementing, especially when your body is under stress, is the best way to go. And taking it in multiple doses is also a good idea, because it tends to get used up in your body very quickly.
Pollution is bad. Help your body protect itself with AM and PM doses of your HealthPak (adding Hepasil DTX™ wouldn’t be a terrible idea either) every day.
