I don’t know about you, but I’ve found it difficult to spend a lot of time with my family throughout the year, let alone get them together for longer activities because of crazy schedules with school, friends, practices, homework, sports, etc. I also find myself competing more and more with the small, electronic box in my living room.
It seems there’s always something getting in the way of family time. And before I realize it, we’re no longer doing anything together.
So, I had all of us come up with a list of fun things to do each season to give us something to aim for at least once a week. Since my kids are far apart in age and different genders, most of the time they don’t agree on an activity. But by letting them have input on what we do as a family, I’m hoping to meet [some] of the needs of each family member (or at least give it a try).
Below are word clouds, by season, of fun activities you can do as a family. Feel free to use these or get creative and personalize your own activities for your specific region and situation.
Now the hard part. When are you going to fit in all of these exciting activities? I would recommend setting aside at least one night a week for a family activity. Find an evening during the week that works best for your family and have everyone commit to keeping it open for family fun. Put it in your schedule, just like you would any other important appointment.
We chose Monday as our family night because our schedules are a little more open that day, but do what works best for you.
In addition to these weekly “appointments,” one weekend a month, we plan a larger activity, such as snowshoeing or going to a festival.
I hope you will all find a little more time in your schedules for family activities this year. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes in not only yourself, but the overall harmony of your home. Plus, you might get to know those who are most important in your life just a little bit better.
Don’t let another week go by. Start enriching your family today!
