Garcelle Beauvais: A Mother’s Job Is Never Done
Editor’s Note: The following is from actress, children’s book author and mother of three, Garcelle Beauvais. The USANA celebrity fan weighs in on parenting, health and her two new children’s books.
A mother’s job is to love, nurture and worry about everything! From making sure your kids are eating right to how their days are going at school. And as a working mom, add guilt and co-parenting to that list—it’s not always easy. But at the end of the day, I know that my kids feel loved and cared for by both parents, and that’s what being a mom is all about.
As a multi-tasking mom, I try to make sure my kids and I are eating right, sleeping well and taking our daily vitamins.
When I discovered that USANA’s MyHealthPak was customized just for me, it completely changed the way I viewed the role of daily vitamins. It was like opening a packet of joy! Taking care of everything at once without having to open and close 12 bottles daily was so convenient.
With the holidays approaching, my boys and I will be doing some traveling to visit our distant family members. So it’s even more important for me to make sure everyone stays healthy—especially the kids—so that we can enjoy our far too limited family time together.
We all know that during the holidays, indulging in way too much comfort food is a familiar practice, but I introduced veggies to my kids early on in the game so they understand what a balanced and nutritional meal looks like.
That’s not to say that I am that parent that won’t allow them to have sugars or other sweet treats. It just needs to be balanced with nutritious foods.
At the end of the day, we’re not perfect and I do make mistakes, but I have taught my kids that there is a lesson to be learned in every thing they do. Such as, take care of your body and your body will take care of you!
In addition to normal, busy, family life, I recently became an author of two wonderful children’s books and my little boys have been my inspiration for the books.
I felt like there weren’t any books that celebrated diversity or had characters that resembled my kids.
My first book, I Am Mixed has been received really well. I even got Halle Berry to write the forward and she said she wished there was a book like this when she was growing up!
The second book in the I AM Book Series is I AM Living in 2 Homes. This book touches on children having two homes through a divorce, and it’s done from a child’s point of view. The overall message is that Love Is Love and Family is Family. I believe it’s important for children to know that it’s not their fault they’re going through this.
With my hectic schedule on set and traveling for my book tour, it can be difficult to stay healthy and active, but I make it a priority to always live a healthy lifestyle. For me that means eating right—and by that I mean a healthy but balanced diet (with the occasional indulgences!) as well as exercising regularly and getting a good night’s sleep. Because life is too short!
As I continue on my life-journey, I’m trying to live a healthy and happy lifestyle and from that I hope my kids will be able to learn, understand and imitate. Are you living the lifestyle that you want for you and your children?
